Anrooijbuurt
Amsterdam
2016
Public space planting in Amsterdam zuid. Soil is sandy, very draining and poor. The characteristic of a sun baked city planting with stone all arround that heats up in the summer, with strong winds between the buildings that dries out the plants fast, is not that much different from a mediterranean planting with hot and very dry periods throughout the year. The only real difference of course are the low temperatures in winter and the lack of light. Maintenance is done by the local community in cooperation with the city maintenance. The planting is quite tough and can somewhat handle dogs, bikes and people walking through.
