Rotterdam – Schiebroek
Design for a family garden around a villa in Rotterdam.
A rectangular floorplan with a very non rectangular planting. Client wanted a colourful garden with paths to explore, to pick flowers from all year and a nice private backyard with a lawn for all the family.
The narrow long frontyard around the house was a challenge. Fencing of the house just with a hedge or tall shrubs would create a boxed feeling and we would lose the nice view from the large windows onto the park across the street. By well placing large shrubs with a colorful woodland underplanting i aimed to achieve two things: 1 the shrubs provide enough privacy from the street while still being open enough to connect the garden to the nice park across the street. And 2 I created an interesting display to be enjoyed from the garden as well as from the street.
The southfacing border against the house is done in warm pink & blue & red flowers while the backdrop of the lawn is kept more calm in predominantly modest flowering shrubs and some shade loving underplanting.
